| Hardware This is where you have a faulty piece of equipment or component such as a video card , modem or hard drive. |

| Software This is where the majority of PC problems occur in the software 'coding' of the programs themselves or the interactions of the programs and the operating system . Often it can be a small piece of software written to make a piece of harware work, these are called drivers. It can get complicated here because not all coputer code 'gets along' with every other bit of code and can cause conflicts resulting in a very unhappy computer. |

| Computer Nasties Computer Virus which is basically a bit of computer code that can copy itself and 'infect' your computer and often be passed on to other computers normally via the internet and do lots of damage. Trojans are destructive programs that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer Browser Hijackers that take over our internet browser and cause things like changing your start page and cause pop up ads. Spyware is sneaky software that watches what you do on your computer, and is potentially a huge security risk, for example it could get your bank or credit card details. Malware is someones idea of a malicious practical joke to make our computer unusable. This is just a small sample, there are many others but these are the most common. |
